Drawing

The foundation or refresher. At any level, this essential drawing practice is for those wanting to learn or improve how to see, and translate that observation into dynamic responsive drawings. This class logically builds on the fundamental elements of drawing including, point, line, gesture, shape, value, texture and composition. The subjects we draw can include still life, botanical, animal, landscape and figure. Teaching is through demonstration, art historical examples, individual assistance, and constructive shared critique.

Painting

Painting from observation. Immerse yourself in color through a complex color wheel exploration which helps us identify its three key aspects, temperature, intensity and value. After a review of drawing fundamentals, we apply our knowledge to mixing the colors observed in the world around us. Subjects can include still life, landscape and figure. Good studio practices are outlined, including organization of your palette, and the use and care of tools and materials. Teaching is through demonstration, an abundance of inspiring historic and contemporary art examples, individual assistance, and constructive shared critique.

Nature Journaling at Madrona Marsh Preserve

This class is will be offered online via ZOOM through the City of Torrance, California. The class highlights the resources at the Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center, the last vernal wetland in Los Angeles County and a rich migratory stopover on the Pacific Flyway. $20 per person per lesson; classes limited to 20 students, on a first come basis. Learning how to see and record the wonders of nature through pictures and words. This class references the California Native Plant Society Guide to Nature Journaling and can include: drawing plants, insects, birds, mammals, trees, landscape; creating a comic book based on nature; journal composition. The class introduces skills in observational drawing, color mixing, ecology and land stewardship. Teaching is through demonstration, artistic and scientific historical examples, individual assistance, and constructive shared critique.

Explorations for new and skilled artists, including classes for adults and for children starting from third grade. Classes taught via ZOOM.

 

Art Lessons for Teachers and Parents

This meet up is designed for teachers or parents designated as the arts leader in your home-school or micro-school group. We will create a course of study , and work through the same lessons that you will present to your students, to get you comfortable with the underlying principles of each exploration. Brainstorm with classmates to troubleshoot, create variations and share fruitage.
