Lifelong learning through art.

Art instruction from a reasoned foundation, designed to unfold the observational and imaginative skills of the individual.

Experienced teaching based on creative explorations from art history and nature

To draw is to see. As a lifelong artist and longtime teacher, I have found logical ways to teach observation based drawing, painting, color practice and composition. Woven into the lessons are inspiring examples from classical and contemporary culture and natural science. Katbird Studio was founded as a place to make these ideas available through group classes, private workshops, art coaching and a free monthly letter with a do-it-youtself mini art lesson to get you started. We share a new lesson each month based on the work of a featured artist.

Testimonials

“My girls have been under Ms. Kathryn’s tutelage for about three years, and their art experience has been a big hit. Her passion for teaching overflows through her lessons and the interactions she has with every student. She has gone the extra mile to get to know my daughters, and her expectations are based on their individual skills and strengths.

“Kathryn has been teaching me for 10 years and I continue to learn so much from her.  Her lessons about being a careful observer have been useful, particularly as I complete a science degree--patience, attention to detail, and a deep respect for every part of nature are all qualities I've learned and developed through drawing. This way of thinking has come in handy as I am navigating university coursework and finding my passion.

“At age 93, I am becoming a children’s book illustrator! Kathryn encouraged me to enhance my 14 children’s poems with pictures, and she demonstrated what they could include. The collaborative process of designing my books with her has been inspiring and motivational. I have so many new ideas and wake up every day looking forward to drawing.”
